Nudibranchs
Despite its spectacular beauty, these animals are practically unknown to us. So much so that most of the species of nudibranchs, also known as sea slugs, lack a common name. What we do know are some facts about the biology of these fascinating mollusks, data that help us understand how, despite its striking and fragile look, they have managed to survive in the competitive marine environment: for example, all nudibranchs are hermaphrodites and can mate with any other individual of the same species, a practical system that facilitates finding a partner in the broad underwater world. All of them are carnivores and their victims are sessile or slow movement animals, such as sponges, hydroids, or other nudibranchs.
The most striking species often have an unpleasant taste, acting their living and contrasting colors as an indicator that warns potential predators of their character inedible. The life cycle of the sea slugs is relatively short: about a year for long-lived species and just over a month the least, more than enough time for us to admire the delicate beauty of these little animals that someone accurately defined as "the butterflies of the seas ".
